Does Licorice root syrup help for tonsil problems?

I 've read about anti-inflammatory effects of Licorice Root,so I was just wondering whether it has a positive effect on upper-respiratory problems such as tonsillitis,and other diseases caused by swollen tonsils.Any comments on this herb?
